California Lo-ove!

As we pulled into San Fran for my first interview of the trip we played the 90’s classic, “California Love,” from our bumpin’ system (my cellphone) just to set the mood.  And it worked.  It was a crazy few days of social meet-and-greet dinners followed by interviews.  Highlights: residents getting way tipsier than their program …

On the Road Again

The past two days have been quite eventful- so much so that I fell asleep in the middle of a conversation last night!  Joe and I got up at 6AM yesterday to get an early start on a morning ski with Dew.  We got all the way to Bridger only to realize that we had …

Getting Ready!

This is on “the list” for Spring 2014.  The grand plan will be uploaded later, but for now this is the big thing on my mind.  Joining some of Bozeman’s finest- Molly, Dewey, & Joe- for the race, if we can secure spots for ourselves!  Apparently we will need full body spandex!  And lighter gear?  Details!

I am trying to prepare a little every day for this challenge.  Probably the best thing I can do to get ready is to actually sign up!  December 1st at 7am MST we will do this and hopefully all secure spots in the race.  My preparation tonight was somewhat stymied by the necessity to make/proof/and practice my neurology presentation for tomorrow.  It was equally hindered by the fact that I made a batch of delicious chocolate chip cookies to distract the judges.  If there’s one thing I’ve learned in marriage it’s that well fed people are kinder and more forgiving (or maybe that’s what Joe has learned)!  Even so, Joey and I managed to sneak in our evening calisthenics.  Just using the word calisthenics makes me feel like a gym teacher!

Not the hardest workout, but the jump squats always get our attention.  My goal is to do this regimen while I’m on the interview trail and any night where I don’t have the time or resources for cardio.  Although if I am going to rehab the knee to fighting shape and finish a 40 mile mountain traverse I had probably just better not miss the mileage at all!

The heli next door

Tonight Joey & I took a study break around 9pm to run around the “neighborhood” we live in– essentially a field on the edge of town juxtaposed next to the hospital’s Emergency Department.  You might expect that we would hear sirens throughout the day, but alas this is Great Falls, Montana and relatively few people …

River Run

Neurology is the last rotation that poses a real graduation challenge.  It is the final exam standing between me and an MD.  There are a few more challenges coming down the pipeline, but this is definitely the most formidable.  We have one week left in Great Falls, Montana, and I have been spending my study …

The Best Year of My Life?

I am in my fourth year of medical school which is widely regarded by physicians as “the best year of your life.”  Now, I have also heard folks refer to high school in a similar way (what!) so I of course take this with a grain of salt.  Nonetheless, I am prepared to at least …
